The Magic 9 Pro<\/strong> was expected in the middle of the range, between the Magic 9 and the Pro Max. On the menu: a square selfie camera<\/strong>, the first of its kind on Android, a 6.85-inch 2K<\/strong> display, a 9,000 mAh<\/strong> battery and 120 W<\/strong> charging. Honor\u2019s first official poster states, in its small print, that the dual 200 MP setup is supported only by the Magic 9 and the Magic 9 Pro Max<\/strong>. The Magic 9 Pro is therefore left out, where the August leak this page was built on credited it with the feature. What it keeps: the square selfie camera<\/strong>, an Android first, a 6.85-inch 2K<\/strong> display, 9,000 mAh<\/strong> and 120 W<\/strong> charging. Its camera array remains to be documented. On 14 September<\/strong>, Honor opened pre-orders for the series: they list only three models \u2014 the Magic 9, the Magic 9 Pro Max and a Magic 9 Super Edition<\/a>. We have no further information on the Magic 9 Pro, which may have been dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news broke on the sidelines of a far more spectacular launch. While presenting its Robot Phone<\/strong> in China \u2014 a handset whose camera sits on a robotic arm \u2014 Honor CEO Li Jian confirmed that the Honor Magic 9<\/strong> series would be officially unveiled on 28 September 2026 in Beijing<\/strong>. The brand immediately opened reservations on its Chinese online store, and released the first official image of the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three models were expected for this generation: the Magic 9<\/a>, the Magic 9 Pro and the Magic 9 Pro Max<\/a>. This page covers the Magic 9 Pro<\/strong>, the model that concentrates most of the photographic innovation without reaching for the size of the range-topper. Until it lands, the current generation is already available in our Honor smartphones<\/a> section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A square selfie camera, an Android first<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the most unexpected item in the file, and it is not on the back of the phone. The Magic 9 Pro would carry a 1:1 front sensor<\/strong>, perfectly square \u2014 a configuration no Android phone has offered so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appeal fits in one sentence: a square sensor covers both vertical and horizontal framing at once. You no longer have to rotate the phone to switch from portrait to landscape, nor give up resolution by cropping. For a group selfie, for a vlog shot at arm’s length, or simply to swap format mid-recording, the gain is immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That front camera would reuse part of what Honor developed for its Robot Phone<\/strong>, the articulated-arm prototype shown this summer. The connection makes sense: both devices chase the same thing, framing a shot without forcing the user to move the hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is not one manufacturer acting alone. Oppo was tipped for a square sensor on its Find X10 series<\/a>, and Vivo is said to be preparing its own for next year. Honor may simply be first to market. The square format is therefore not a spec-sheet curiosity: it is a shift being prepared at three brands at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography: Honor leaves the Pro out of its dual 200 MP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the line that has moved the most, and it has not moved the expected way. In August, tipster Digital Chat Station<\/em> credited the Magic 9 Pro with a top-flight camera array: a 200 MP main sensor in 1\/1.28-inch<\/strong> opening at f\/1.57<\/strong>, a 200 MP periscope telephoto in 1\/1.4-inch<\/strong> at f\/2.6<\/strong>, and a 50 MP ultra-wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 9 September<\/strong>, Honor published its first official camera poster, and the small print that closes it shuts the door: the dual 200 megapixels, the company writes, \u00ab\u00a0is supported only by the Honor Magic9 and the Honor Magic9 Pro Max\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>. The range has three models; the Pro is the only one not named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One detail explains how this happened. The figures from the August leak \u2014 1\/1.28-inch at f\/1.57 on one side, 1\/1.4-inch at f\/2.6 on the other \u2014 are exactly<\/strong> the ones the official poster gives for the Magic 9<\/a> and the Magic 9 Pro Max<\/a>. The spec sheet passed around in August under the \u00ab\u00a0Pro\u00a0\u00bb label was, in all likelihood, describing those two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what does the Magic 9 Pro get? Honor does not say, and no source offers an answer to date. The 3-degree<\/strong> optical stabilisation announced by the same leak \u2014 where conventional OIS stops at 1.5 or 2 degrees of compensation \u2014 falls under the same caveat: it came with that camera array, and it is not confirmed on this model. For scale, the current generation already paired a 50 MP main sensor with a 200 MP telephoto on the Magic 8 Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The position is an unusual one, and that is what makes this range worth following. In a series, it is normally the entry model that loses the best camera. Here it is the middle one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design: an off-centre camera island with cinema lines<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After several generations faithful to the large centred circle on the back, Honor makes a marked design change. The first official preview released by the manufacturer shows a large circular camera island shifted into the top left corner<\/strong>, joined by a second two-lens module to its right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
