Hands-on video

You can watch the PhoneDroid team’s YouTube walkthrough right here to see the phone from every angle and in action. As the video clearly shows, the quality of the finish and the treatment of the back panel stand out the moment you take it out of the box.

Vivo X500 Pro Max box contents, design and handling

From the moment you open the Vivo X500 Pro Max’s box, you can see the effort the brand has made. While most of its direct rivals strip their boxes down to the bare minimum, Vivo still delivers a complete package. Inside, you’ll find the FlashCharge 90 W charger (the Global Version sold by PhoneDroid includes it), an ultra-fast USB-A to USB-C charging cable, a well-made reinforced silicone case that hugs the phone’s curves perfectly, the SIM ejector tool and a factory-applied screen protector.

Picking the phone up for the first time, I was torn between admiration for the finish and surprise at its size. Let’s be blunt: the Vivo X500 Pro Max is heavy! At 225 grams on the scales, this is a hefty smartphone that you’ll never forget is in your jeans pocket or handbag. For comparison, the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max, the season’s other heavyweight, weighs 233 grams. The weight is especially noticeable during long one-handed reading sessions in bed or extended phone calls.

That said, the overall ergonomics have clearly been carefully worked out. The slightly rounded aluminium edges blend seamlessly into the frosted glass back. This matte finish has the huge advantage of resisting fingerprints while feeling wonderfully soft to the touch. Grip is excellent overall thanks to a fairly well-balanced weight distribution, even if the imposing circular camera module on the back tips the balance slightly towards the top. The camera bump protrudes significantly from the back: lying flat on a table without the supplied case, the phone tends to rock when you tap the top of the screen.

In terms of specs and durability, the Vivo X500 Pro Max carries both IP68 and IP69 certification. As a reminder, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating classifies how well a device is sealed: the first digit (6) guarantees full protection against dust, the second (8) certifies prolonged immersion in water beyond 1 metre, and level 9 (IP69) guarantees resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. It’s the highest level of water resistance available on a consumer smartphone in 2026.

Vivo X500 Pro Max display

The Vivo X500 Pro Max’s display is a genuine knockout. It’s a large 6.85-inch flat panel that covers more than 90% of the front of the phone. Whether you’re streaming a series, browsing photos or simply surfing the web, the picture quality is simply stunning. Colours are vibrant without being oversaturated, viewing angles are perfect and scrolling through the interface feels remarkably smooth day after day.

In the evening, the screen knows how to go easy on your eyes. During my tests in total darkness in my bedroom, the minimum brightness dropped low enough not to dazzle (down to 1 nit), and the built-in blue light filters effectively reduce eye strain. Outdoors, the experience is just as impressive: in direct sunlight on a walk this weekend, readability stayed perfect, with no need to squint to read a message or frame a shot.

On the purely technical side, for enthusiasts, this is a 2K AMOLED panel based on LTPO technology. LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) allows the screen to vary its refresh rate dynamically from 1 Hz to 120 Hz depending on what’s on screen. When you’re reading a static page of text, the display drops to 1 Hz to save battery; as soon as you scroll or launch a game, it instantly jumps to 120 Hz for maximum visual comfort. The screen also supports 144 Hz in compatible apps.

The 2K resolution (3,168 × 1,440 pixels) delivers an exemplary density of 507 pixels per inch, keeping text razor-sharp. As for brightness, the Vivo X500 Pro Max hits a phenomenal peak of 4,400 nits, and 2,000 nits full-screen. It supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Finally, for the most sensitive eyes, the screen features high-frequency 2,160 Hz PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) dimming. This brightness-control technique eliminates flicker at low brightness, reducing headaches for people who are sensitive to it.

Vivo X500 Pro Max performance and gaming

Throughout my days of testing, the Vivo X500 Pro Max didn’t flinch for a single second, whatever I threw at it. Apps open instantly, switching between heavy apps happens without any slowdown, and the system’s overall responsiveness gives a reassuring sense of power. It’s the kind of phone where everything happens immediately, without the slightest wait or hesitation.

For fans of numbers and benchmarks, the Vivo X500 Pro Max is powered by the latest-generation MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro chip, built on a 2 nm process, backed by 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512 GB of ultra-fast UFS 4.1 storage.

In Geekbench 7, which measures raw CPU power, the phone scores 2,295 points single-core and 6,804 points multi-core.

In the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, a demanding 20-minute loop designed to push the GPU to its limits and measure how well it holds up over time, the Vivo X500 Pro Max posts a very high peak, with a Best Loop Score of 6,182 points. However, its lowest loop comes in at 1,851 points, which works out to a stability of 29.9%. Over those 20 minutes, the battery dropped from 37% to 27% and the phone’s temperature rose from 35 °C to 43 °C.

This drop in output over time comes down to particularly aggressive throttling: to stop the components from overheating and risking damage to the device, the processor sharply cuts its clock speed after a few minutes of intense load. In practice, to put it simply: the phone has plenty in reserve to deliver huge bursts of power in short sessions, but it noticeably eases off during very long gaming marathons to protect its components and stay at a comfortable temperature in the hand.

Photo and video: the benchmark

Photography has traditionally been the great strength of Vivo’s X series, and the X500 Pro Max takes the concept even further. My weekend of shooting confirmed just how excellent the system is: this is a professional camera that almost happens to make phone calls on the side. The partnership with optics specialist Zeiss once again brings an apochromatic (APO) telephoto lens, designed to limit colour fringing along edges.

1. Daylight landscapes (main camera)

In broad daylight, the main sensor works wonders. Sharpness across the whole scene is impressive, capturing the finest details in foliage and building textures. Dynamic range is huge (17 EV, thanks to LOFIC technology): shadows stay legible without the bright sky being blown out (pure white with no detail). Colour rendering strikes a perfect balance between the “Zeiss Natural” mode (very true to life) and the default vivid mode.

2. Wide-angle (ultra-wide camera)

The ultra-wide keeps excellent colour consistency with the main sensor, which is rare enough to be worth pointing out. Distortion at the edges of the frame (the “fisheye” effect) is perfectly corrected in software without compromising sharpness (the precision of fine detail) at the centre of the image.

3. Optical and digital zoom (periscope telephoto)

The periscope telephoto (an internal mirror system that lengthens the focal length without making the module much thicker) is the real star of this phone. Its 200-megapixel sensor measures 1/1.4 inch, a rare size for a telephoto. The 3.5x optical zoom (85 mm) delivers striking sharpness, ideal for isolating a detail or bringing a distant subject closer. Push the hybrid zoom to 10x and the image stays remarkably clean and perfectly usable for prints. Even at very high digital zoom levels, AI manages to reconstruct edges and keep the scene legible.

4. Backlit scenes

Shooting into the setting sun, the HDR algorithm (High Dynamic Range, which merges several exposures) does a remarkable job. Where many smartphones produce a dark silhouette or a completely white sky, the Vivo X500 Pro Max manages to lift the shadows in the foreground while preserving the warm tones of the sun.

5. Night and low-light photography

At night, the camera pulls out all the stops. Thanks to its generously sized 1/1.28-inch main sensor and LOFIC technology (which improves the pixels’ ability to hold light without saturating), night shots around town show impressive clarity. Digital noise (the stray grain you see in dark areas) is completely absent, and illuminated signs or street lamps don’t bleed into the rest of the shot. Even indoors in the evening, under ordinary living-room lighting, the result stays sharp, as Pandore proves.

6. Portrait mode

Portrait mode benefits directly from the Zeiss signature, with simulations of several of the brand’s legendary lenses (Biotar, Sonnar, Planar). Edge detection around hair is surgically precise, and the background blur (the bokeh effect) is soft and very natural, a far cry from the artificial blur applied by entry-level models.

7. Macro and close-ups

Because the telephoto lens can focus just a few centimetres from the subject (tele-macro), close-ups of flowers or small objects reveal stunning detail and texture.

8. Front camera (selfies)

The 50-megapixel front sensor, with autofocus, produces very sharp selfies by day and by night. The default processing slightly smooths skin, but this can be switched off entirely in the settings for a 100% natural look.

9. Video and advanced features

On the video side, the Vivo X500 Pro Max can shoot up to 4K at 120 frames per second on all of its rear cameras, and even 8K at 30 fps, with 4K slow motion at 240 frames per second. Optical and electronic stabilisation work together brilliantly: walking briskly during a 30-second video test, the footage stayed exceptionally smooth, without the unpleasant judder caused by footsteps. Experienced videographers will appreciate 10-bit Log recording, which offers maximum latitude for colour grading in post-production.

To sum up on photography: whether you’re a casual shooter who just wants great holiday photos or a demanding photographer after precise manual controls and ultra-detailed RAW files, the Vivo X500 Pro Max delivers on every front.

Vivo X500 Pro Max battery life and charging

With so much power and a large, very bright screen, battery life could have been the Vivo X500 Pro Max’s weak spot. Far from it. Vivo has fitted its flagship with an impressive 7,800 mAh battery using silicon-carbon technology. This increases the battery’s energy density (storing more energy in the same or a slightly smaller volume) compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries. For comparison, the Vivo X300 Pro had a 6,500 mAh battery, while the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max goes up to 8,000 mAh.

Over my week of testing, battery life proved excellent. On a typical and particularly busy day (leaving at 7:30 am with a full battery, frequent email checks, 1 hour of GPS navigation on public transport, 45 minutes of social media, 30 minutes of gaming over lunch and around thirty photos in the late afternoon), the phone still had 38% left at 11 pm, with a total screen-on time of 6 h 45 min for the day. With lighter use at the weekend, I comfortably went past two full days without needing to charge.

In PCMark Work 3.1, a test that simulates continuous office use with the screen on, the phone lasts 26 hours and 3 minutes.

For wired charging, the smartphone accepts up to 90W FlashCharge. In my timed measurements with the supplied charger:

  • From 20% to 80%: just 19 minutes.
  • From 0% to 100%: barely 34 minutes.

That’s extremely handy for a quick top-up before heading out for the evening. On the wireless side, the phone supports fast wireless charging at up to 40W (via the brand’s proprietary stand). It can also charge your accessories, such as earbuds, when you place them on its back (reverse charging).

Software and interface

The Vivo X500 Pro Max runs OriginOS 7, Vivo’s in-house skin, based on Android 17. The interface is particularly clear, clean and responsive. That’s precisely one of the reasons I enjoyed my week of testing so much: it feels intuitive from the very first minutes. Menus are well organised, navigation animations are flawlessly smooth and there’s a wealth of personalisation options (themes, live wallpapers, Always-On Display styles).

On the apps front, good news: the Global Version sold by PhoneDroid comes with the full suite of Google services (Google Play Store, Maps, Gmail, YouTube) built in and working from the very first boot. The French localisation is flawless throughout every system submenu, with no typos and no terms left in English. There are, however, 3 or 4 preinstalled third-party apps at initial setup, but they can be uninstalled in two seconds with a simple long press.

AI is part of the package too, with the “Vivo AI” suite of tools. You get genuinely useful everyday features: automatic transcription and summaries of voice recordings in meetings, one-tap magic removal of unwanted elements from photos, and real-time translation of phone calls.

As for software support, Vivo guarantees 5 years of major Android updates and 6 years of security patches. That’s excellent coverage, which ensures the device will last. Finally, I didn’t encounter a single blocking bug or app crash during my seven days of intensive use.

Network, audio and security

When it comes to connectivity, the Vivo X500 Pro Max gets everything right. 5G reception, tested on the Bouygues Telecom network in urban and suburban areas, proved very stable. For those living in rural areas or far from big cities, the phone supports the full range of key European network bands, including B20 (800 MHz) and n28 (700 MHz), which are essential for good reception indoors and in the countryside. The smartphone supports dual physical SIMs as well as eSIM (a digital SIM card). Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, an infrared port (to control a TV) and an NFC chip for contactless payments are, of course, all on board. Call quality is crystal clear, with the noise-cancelling microphone very effectively filtering out traffic and wind noise during my conversations out on the street.

For multimedia, the phone relies on two stereo speakers positioned on the top and bottom edges. The sound is loud, balanced and doesn’t distort even at 90% volume. Bass is solid for a smartphone, making music and films very enjoyable without headphones.

On the security side, unlocking relies on two main systems:

  • The under-display fingerprint sensor: Vivo uses the latest generation of ultrasonic technology here. Unlike conventional optical sensors, which light up your finger with a bright glow, the ultrasonic sensor maps the 3D ridges of your fingerprint using sound waves. The result: unlocking is instant (under 0.2 seconds), works even with wet or dirty fingers, and won’t dazzle you in pitch darkness.
  • 2D face recognition: this relies on the front camera. Very fast in daylight, it unlocks the phone as soon as you raise it to face level.

Up against the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max, also available from PhoneDroid, is its most direct rival: it packs exactly the same chip, the Dimensity 9600 Pro. It’s slightly more compact (6.78-inch screen) but heavier (233 grams), and it bets on an even bigger battery (8,000 mAh) and faster wireless charging (50 W). The Vivo X500 Pro Max takes the lead on wired charging (90 W versus 80 W) and on its telephoto camera, whose 200-megapixel sensor measures 1/1.4 inch.
